If shopping for groceries is boring and time consuming for most people, Mahesh Jakhetiya’s app shopEZZY is aiming to at least make it hassle-free. His app will allow users in Indian cities to pick items, compare prices across different retailers, and make an informed purchase decision from the platform itself, (and here is the ‘wow’ factor), in less than three minutes! In an interview, Mahesh gave us a lowdown on his plans, of helping people to get their weekends back.
A: As a married guy, I was tired of grocery shopping – which ruins my weekend and probably many other couples/ families’ too. Hence I turned to online grocery shopping. While doing that from existing portals – the experience was not satisfying, I found it too cumbersome and time consuming. Besides that, there were limited choices and the “Am I getting it at the cheapest price?” doubt that lurked at the back of my mind. Hence I embarked on a journey to create a product that will take away all your grocery shopping woes and let you do what’s best done on a weekend – relax and enjoy with your family. Hence our mantra #ClaimYourWeekendBack
Q. What’s the journey so far been like, in terms of growth in team, product catalogue, customer base?
A: The journey has been fantastic so far. We have received fantastic response and have already got 3,000 users using our app within 15 days of launch. We are also trending at the top in the ‘New-FREE-Apps’ section in the ‘shopping’ category. We were prominently placed at No. 1 for 4-5 days. We are a team of six guys and soon intend to grow by 20+ before June.
Q. What does the service do to verify quality and ensure stale/damaged produce is not sent to customers by retail partners?
A: We are a ‘Technology Enablement’ platform and intend to migrate consumers already getting home delivery done from their choice of retailer. So consumers already know which retailer will give them good products – hence that relationship is already there in most cases and will be maintained on a retailer level. Plus while ordering as a consumer, you will know exactly from which retailer you are purchasing the stuff, and what is the feedback (he has recevied) from other consumers.
Q. Which retailers have you partnered with?
A: To start with, we are partnering with five retailers (three online ones and two neighbourhood supermarkets) in select geographies of Gurgaon. Obviously, the plan is to take this number to 500+ retailers across the Top 10 Indian cities.
Q. What’s your revenue model?
A: You can only succeed with grocery if you have volumes. More Customers = More Orders = More High Ticket purchases. We understand this and are preparing for high volumes from the start. Besides we are working on three more revenue stream possibilities, which will be launched at the appropriate time.
Q. Do you have a reward/loyalty programme in place for users?
A: It’s on the cards and will roll out once we are out of Beta phase.
Q. What customer feedback/complaint mechanism is in place to deal with service issues? Does responsibility lie with the retailer or with shopEZZY?
A: Quality and delivery of actual goods lies with the retailers. shopEZZY will own the consumer experience and will be responsible for all technical matters. Besides our Customer Experience team will get regular feedback about retailers from consumers after every order is delivered to them. That way, we want to help both consumers and retailers get the best experience.
