With over 118.9 million farmers spread across the length and breadth of the country, they make up about 24.8% of our total workforce. Agriculture, with its contributing sectors, is the largest livelihood provider in India, more so in the massive rural areas. It contributes a significant percentage to the GDP of our country, and has witnessed a white, yellow and a blue revolution. The mobile revolution is currently in its nascent stages, but having said that, the gap between the buyer and the farmer is getting smaller by the day! Here are 3 ompanies and their services which are helping farmers communicate with the market directly aalongwith providing a showcase platform for these agricultural products.
A buy/sell platform with information about commodity prices directly provided by the Government of India, produce info and a map based view of available farm products with the ability of connecting to a required farmer via just a simple phone call. MandiTrades aims to solve the problems of marketing and help the farmers sell their products in a timely manner. When they register with the site, it captures all of their produce and location details and updates its database. Farmers can know of average demand, peak/low demand season, in and off season needs, rare items and their prices and can plan their farms accordingly For a buyer – it gets easier as he/she gets a complete list which can be filtered by. geography, produce type, location, availability, yield etc.
Mandi Trades also has an Android App available for download.
Livestock farming is one of the most important forms of livelihood for many families in Bangladesh. The density of cattle is about 174 per square kilometer, which amounts to 25.7 million cattle – it is one of the highest in the world. Unfortunately the ratio of registered veterinarians to cattle is very low and Mpower’s ICT Livestock Management Systems (LMS) aims to decrease this gap. The LMS wants to connect Livestock professionals to small holder farmers via Livestock intermediaries. These Livestock workers register the farmers, gather regular updates about their cattle and provide expert medical advise – all through their mobile application. That way one doctor can serve many holders and the farmers can connect with experts at a very low cost.
