The unprecedented and devastating floods in Chennai have united telecom operators, mobile services and mobile wallet providers. NDTV reports that telecom operators like Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone have offered varying quantums of free and discounted talktime and mobile data to reach out to loved ones and check after their safety and security in the aftermath of the floods.
Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also announced that state-run BSNL would not charge anything for a week. According to The Economic Times, mobile payments provider Paytm is providing the residents of flood-stricken Chennai with free instant recharge of Rs 30. Residents can also call 18001030033 to request top-up of certain mobile numbers.
