The much awaited finale of the Ericsson Innovation Awards was held in Delhi at the IIT campus amongst an audience full of enthusiastic students and future innovators! In the second edition of the awards , which were initiated in January 2016- the grand finale event saw 6 finalists vying for the top 3 spots.
The festivities kicked off with a quick note from Mr P V M Rao- the co-ordinator of the IIT Delhi Incubation centre followed by an informative speech by Paolo Colella- the Head of Region India, Ericsson which stressed on the importance of innovation to the company.
” Technology is an integral part of today’s innovation and we are very glad to be the pioneers in this sector. We started in 1876 , we were the first to bring a commercial phone into the market and many more innovations. For 140 years, we have been on the forefront of the technological revolution”. He also went on explain Ericsson’s current focus areas which are 5G, IoT and cloud.
Gracing the stage next was Prof.Rao – Director of IIT Delhi with a note to the students on the need for innovation in the fields of healthcare, security and the fact that 20 million people in India go below the poverty line because of ineffective healthcare infrastructure.
R Gopalakrishnan- Former Director, Tata Sons took the event forward with an interesting speech on the 4 pillars of innovation being creativity, challenge, communication and channelization!
The finalists took centre stage with full scale presentations and demos of their prototypes. Each of the teams were given 6 minutes for a run through of their device and the features, followed up by questions from the eminent jury members. Here’s a quick recap of their innovations!

An intense panel discussion with industry mavens and experts about “How startups and enterprises are fuelling innovation” kept the audience completely enthralled!
The jury did have a tough time deciding and after a rather intense meeting, 3 winners were announced at the Ericsson Innovation Awards 2016. These were: the teams from BITS Pilani ( Human Recognition using GAIT), IIT Bombay ( LED Beacon and Receiver Module) and IIT Varanasi ( Advanced Breathalyzer Helmet) who took home an award prize of Rs 13 lakhs which will be used towards incubating the winning projects at any IIT-approved technology business incubators.
