MIT already has a device to help 3D print 10 different materials at a time – something that couldn’t be done earlier. But, this doesn’t help us understand how to design such complex objects. For that, MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) has created a new program called ‘Foundry.’ Engadget reports that according to the CSAIL, Foundry can import objects designed with traditional CAD programs like SolidWorks, and then assign specific materials or properties to different parts.
So now, designing multi-material objects won’t take days or require you to use multiple 3D printers. It will take just a few minutes! Also, Foundry will help you print an object in one go instead of manufacturing a separate piece for each material. Kiril Vidimče, PhD Student and lead author of a new paper on Foundry, said,
It’s like Photoshop for 3D materials.”
